Breastfeeding Myths, Busted
Parent or not, you’ve likely heard some myths, murmurs, or misconceptions about breastfeeding. It's a topic that can bring up a lot of fear, anxiety, and even judgment - and that's the last thing any new parent needs.
At IMMA, our goal is to provide you with the facts, so you can approach your journey with confidence, compassion, and an open mind. Whether you're pregnant and preparing to breastfeed, or you're a new parent navigating the early days between the breast and the bottle, we're here to support you.
Myth #1: Breastfeeding moms have no life.
The early days of breastfeeding can feel all-consuming, and often, they are. Your baby's job is to eat, sleep, and fill their diaper - and they need to do that around the clock. But once you get the hang of it, breastfeeding can actually give you more freedom. You don't have to worry about packing bottles, warming milk, or finding a clean place to feed. All you need is you and your baby, connected and nourished, wherever you need to be.
Myth #2: You'll lose your milk supply.
The truth is, your body is remarkably equipped to regulate your milk supply based on your baby's needs. Unless you're actively interfering with feedings or pumping sessions, your supply is unlikely to just "disappear" one day. It may naturally decrease over time as your baby starts solids, but that's a gradual, gentle process - not a sudden loss. Your body reads the signals and knows how to provide you what you and your baby need.
Myth #3: You have to pump after every feeding.
Pumping after every breastfeed is often unnecessary, and can actually disrupt your body's natural milk production. The only time I recommend pumping right after a feeding is if your baby is having trouble efficiently transferring milk, or if you're trying to increase a low supply. Otherwise, let your body do its thing! Pump when you need to, but don't feel like you have to be hooked up to that machine 24/7.
We know how overwhelming those early weeks and months of nursing can be. But we also know that your body was made for this. With the right support and information, breastfeeding can be an incredible, empowering experience.
